In keeping with the thoughts about who allows you to use other name servers, we have been using DirectNic as our registrar for many years. Make sure to give them a look. The can register about any name you can think of including Columbia 😉 allow you to create your own custom name servers, and allow you to point to any name server you wish. This all means ultimate flexibility for us.

You had said that the /etc/passwd table returned too many results. I asked that if you didn't want a list of all of the users on the system, how would you define an appropriate list to return as you obviously had to have some shortly list in mind to make the statement. I wanted to know, how would you describe a better return... which subset of users do you want returned when you query the userlist (everyone I know of what's all, not some kept secret.)

You agree not all, but you didn't explain how you would determine which ones to display and which ones to hide. And if the Windows tools don't show all, how do you manage the secret accounts that those commands do not display? Are you saying that there is yet another set of PowerShell commands to manipulate the true local user list?

Your response doesn't follow the discussion. Those are commands, not users.

      @Pete-S said in DNS woes:

If I understand correctly, DNS propagates everywhere anyway so what difference does it make? Or are the DNS records not cached/replicated?

It does, and they do. Propagation, caching, etc. all happens with DNS. But that doesn't mean that you don't still want your master DNS to be screaming fast, globally distributed, highly available, etc. If your DNS goes down, most DNS providers (Google, etc.) will known almost immediately and see your infrastructure as offline as part of their security system.

Veeam is one of them. our print audit software is another. Anything that seems to be attached to a SQL instance seems to not want to start up after a reboot.

Have you tried setting them to delayed start? Maybe SQL Server is taking too long and they are hanging while waiting on it.

I thought I did that but guess not. We'll start there and see what happens.

Working on an idea for a personal project.

I intend to use a projector for this, at least right now. But would like to see what are some suggested application for both Windows and linux

ETA: Virtual Monitor - as in split a single Display Monitor into two or more virtual monitors.

Does on of these two scenarios fit your goal?

Split the screen into multiple desktops and each space would have its own taskbar and running apps that would be trapped in that space?

      or

The screen would be split into multiple spaces in such a way that if you went into Windows Display settings Windows would present you with what it believes are multiple physical monitors?

DisplayFusion does #1. I would love to see a driver that does #2

The above does not mean there may not be issues with the network due to hidden traffic shapers and shit. But very few ISPs do that to a significant level.

I think a fair number do. I've had several do it.

@scottalanmiller said in ISP Failover with Cisco ASA:

That's mostly true. But Cisco considers it real Cisco and it shows their view of themselves. And that, I always think, is important. Cisco doesn't seem themselves as an enterprise player. And I've been in sales meetings with Cisco and that definitely comes through when talking to them.

That's not what I got from my sales conversations with them. They were very explicit about real Cisco and the lesser sub-brands.

Having been at two huge banks that were burned by being willing to use UCS, Cisco and enterprise are two words I never put together. From networking to phones to servers, Cisco is consistently overpriced and underperforming.

I absolutely loved UCS, even wrote the original oVirt/RHV plugin for the VMFEX cards. They were ahead of their time with those boxes, but the cloud pretty much killed everything really cool and advanced about HW

      Worth noting....

Clojure is a true LISP, implemented on JVM.
F# is not LISP, but OCaml variant, implemented on .NET.

LISP and OCaml are both fully functional languages, but also very different. But Clojure and F# are the two prominent functional languages today, with Clojure being way out in the lead.

I was saying I had considered setting up a Pi-hole at each of our extended family's homes. Sorry if that was not clear earlier.

It was, but why? That's buying one piece of hardware per location, and managing one install per location. Why not just all share one?

Agreed- if you must- host it on vultr for this.. for less than a happy meal you can have one running for a month
